Makayla- Girls on Fire, Literally- SEASON 4
In July of 2020, Matt and I’s San Francisco apartment burned down in the middle of the night while we were in it. My best friend, Makayla was visiting us at the time and she unfortunately was in the apartment with us. We lost everything we owned. We obviously survived but with the survival came a lot of PTSD, trauma, confusion, anger, fear, sadness, anxiety, paranoia, gratefulness and healing. It is almost 5 years later where I feel like I am finally in a good place to share this story.
In these 5 years of growth and healing, I could not be more proud of Matt, Makayla and myself. Every day is different but from where I am now from five years ago is like night and day. I simply would not be where I am today without the constant love, support and resources from my family, best friends, coworkers, complete strangers and the Red Cross.
This podcast episode is with Makayla and I as we share the story of the San Francisco fire. We cope with humor, therapy, alcohol & each other. We tell the story of the fire that night, the days following, how we all three coped with the trauma, how you can support people in home fires, how you need to check your fucking fire alarms right now and some giggles in between.
If you or anyone you know has experienced a home fire, please use Red Cross Home Fire campaign as a resource. Please also feel free to use me as a resource to talk, for donations, for any type of support. Unfortunately when really bad things and trauma happens, we can’t do it alone <3
